The great soul

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born 152 years ago today, on October 2, 1869, in India. He worked as a lawyer and politician. He became known because he campaigned for the rights and liberation of the Indian people for more than 50 years of his life. For this he was worshiped by many people in his country. They gave him the name "Mahatma" Gandhi. "Mahatma" means "great soul". Gandhi himself found the name exaggerated.

British oppression
After studying in London, Gandhi returned to India as a lawyer at the age of 22. At that time India was ruled by Great Britain because India was a British colony. Many Indians fared very badly. Because the British had introduced many laws and rules with which they exploited and oppressed the Indians. Gandhi wanted to get the Indians to stop accepting injustices. He fought for India's independence.
Peaceful disobedience

Gandhi wanted the Indians to be able to determine their own country again. The special thing about his fight was that he fought without violence. Gandhi called on the people in his country to simply no longer obey the British and no longer obey the unjust laws.

The salt marsh
The "salt march", which Gandhi led in 1930 to defend himself against the new "salt tax", is particularly famous. The British had decided that Indians should pay extra taxes on salt. So Gandhi marched to the sea with hundreds of Indians. It was a long and arduous journey. But she was also successful. At the seaside, the Indians learned to make their own salt from the salt water. As a result, they were no longer dependent on the salt of the British.
Tireless dedication

Gandhi and his wife Kasturba Nakanji had four sons. Kasturba Gandhi supported her husband and continued his fight when he was arrested. This happened several times: In total, Gandhi was imprisoned for eight years. Nevertheless, Gandhi continued to fight for India's independence. He never became violent and won in the end: India gained independence in August 1947. Six months later, on January 30, 1948, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was murdered at the age of 79.
