What are some of the beautiful lies

Such beautiful lies

Louise is neither particularly beautiful, nor particularly rich, nor particularly special in any way. So it's no wonder that she hasn't made it anywhere in New York so far. But then she gets to know Lavinia. Lavinia is life, pure and without barriers. Lavinia pulls her away with her and shows her a world that was previously hidden from Louise. Everything is fine as long as you follow Lavinia's rules.

Socially connected

Man is by nature a social being. We want someone who loves us, who may even admire us. We want to belong. Louise wants that too. A blessing when she meets Lavinia and the world of the rich and beautiful opens up to her. First. But soon you realize: the blessing is short, the hardship great. If you want to go on ... more

If you want to continue to belong, you have to feel. Endure Lavinia's moods, please her and please, please do. Louise knows that. Louise is very good at it. Louise manages to fight for a place at Lavinia’s side.

But one can constantly observe the changes that are going on in Louise. What once held joy is now running the gauntlet. Your own life is completely out of control when you live far beyond your means, in fact have to live to be interesting enough. Neither Lavinia nor her very intelligent friends see how Louise mutates from a quiet wallflower into a popular party fan. And in the end completely loses itself, and yet finds its way back to its origin. Even if it had been better hidden.

Such beautiful lies is a successful observation of today's society of the young, rich and beautiful. A game that few really master without going under. The author manages brilliantly to stage the transformation of Louise's personality. At first she hardly has a say, is silent a lot, is only present. Later it blossoms, becomes bolder, takes liberties. Then to discover your own beast within yourself without getting lost in this society. She reveals a hard core that saves her from doom.

The whole time I was reminded of two great figures in literature: The great parties of the great Gatsby in all their decadence, albeit riddled with modern tastelessness. And then there is Holly Golightly, the elegant, popular, tragic person whom Lavinia portrays in all her glamor. The other one carries with her in order to enjoy the adventure of life, which cannot help anyone, not even herself. And yet she is adored by everyone.

The style of the book is far from ordinary, and opinions are probably divided here. It is laconic, it is neither convoluted nor dry. It is - in my opinion - exactly how such a story should be told. Neither very close to the people, nor from above, he takes with him and yet maintains the necessary distance to enjoy the parties without losing himself in them. Not like Louise. Or Mimi. Or all the poor souls who have ever stepped into Lavinia's orbit and perished in the social vortex.

Conclusion

For me an absolute highlight that fell into my hands. A modern fairy tale of society, which, interspersed with pomp and glamor, always comes back to the real tragedy of life.
