Why don't hotels have ceiling fans?

Ceiling fan and / or air conditioning?

As a service for their guests, hotels offer rooms with air conditioning or ceiling fans. The promise of pleasant temperatures is a decision criterion when booking. Both air conditioners convey invigorating freshness in the room, but the perceived ideal values fluctuate within the traveling cultures. North Americans habitually prefer cooler room temperatures than Europeans

Application ceiling fan and air conditioning

As soon as the ceiling fan rotates and air swirls, evaporative cooling becomes noticeable on the skin. A thermometer will not show a temperature difference - the effect is only felt. A ceiling fan can be regulated in 3 to 6 speed levels with one movement. This needs-based control is also an energy-efficient air conditioning solution.

The fan is only used when someone is in the room and starts it. The cooling effect occurs immediately, it is not necessary for the device to run through. When the fan is switched off, the actual room warmth can be felt again. Ceiling fans for use in large rooms can be controlled fully automatically with TDA temperature sensors. Air conditioning regulates the room temperature down like a large refrigerator. This requires a considerable amount of additional energy and generates audible operating noises.

Especially at bedtime a nuisance for relaxing vacationers and business travelers. If the room has been cooled down by the air conditioning, it can take longer for the room temperature to rise after it has been switched off. If the temperature is set too low, the hotel guest sometimes freezes at night, despite the holiday region. For this reason, please note that with air conditioning, guests are able to operate and regulate the temperature easily. At best, the system switches off when the room is empty and the window is open.

Advantages of the ceiling fan:

  • Eco motors from 3 watt energy consumption
  • low purchase and operating costs
  • noiseless operation (at night!)
  • hardly any maintenance and cleaning effort
  • Motor guarantee up to 25 years (depending on the manufacturer)
  • uncomplicated installation on the ceiling light
  • additional lighting function
  • attractive design element
  • simple control elements (wall switch, remote control, pull switch)
  • Ventilation according to personal needs
  • no running costs for filters
  • no breakthrough in the wall, suitable for rental apartments
  • no drafts, no “shock freezing” / extreme hypothermia
  • also for outdoor areas, wooden garden houses, etc.
  • Heat recovery in winter (save heating costs)

Advantages of modern air conditioning:

  • Active filter against pollen, bacteria
  • actual room cooling
  • lowers the humidity
  • if required, heat and humidify the air
  • high cooling capacity for tropical climates

Disadvantages air conditioning:

  • high energy demand -> electricity costs
  • Partly problematic life cycle assessment
  • Risk of colds due to temperature differences inside / outside
  • Bacterial contamination with poor hygiene
  • running costs for filter system
  • Operating noise up to 60 decibels
  • annual inspection and maintenance
  • with exhaust air hose: warm air penetrates

Conclusion:

Operating costs for fans are lower than for air conditioning systems, such rooms can be offered more cheaply. But there is no general recommendation for air conditioning, the location of the holiday region is a decisive factor.

  • With a likely running time of a few hours per day and less than 150 hot days per year, a fan is the smartest solution. Economical, controllable as required and with additional options such as lighting, it is ideal for hotel equipment, private buildings and offices.
  • Is a continuous, real temperature reduction with air dehumidification necessary due to the tropical climate? Then the more expensive air conditioning system is a solution.
  • Quite a few hoteliers opt for the combination solution: during the day the air conditioning is switched on, in the evening a quietly rotating ceiling fan (with DC motor) guarantees an undisturbed night's sleep.
